Highlights from Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service at LAYC!
Updated on January 19, 2023
Over the course of two days, the planned events commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service were even more positive and successful than we could have hoped. First, on Monday, January 16, President and CEO Lupi Quinteros-Grady and Secretary of the US Dept. of Health & Human Services, Xavier Becerra, spoke to a packed crowd at Buck Lodge Middle School about the importance of service. The rest of the day was filled with activities and performances led by the AmeriCorps members, youth, and even a rap by Buck Lodge Middle School's Principal, Mr. Nance! Then, on Tuesday, January 17, the DC AmeriCorps team hosted a panel discussion and resource fair for the afterschool program students as well as being open to the community.
The images below are just a small collection of the happiness and spirit of service that permeated both events.

On Monday, January 16 and Tuesday, January 17, the AmeriCorps members at Latin American Youth Center will commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service with several unique events. Did you know MLK JR. Day of Service is the only federal holiday designated a “day of service”?
Here is some more information:
“The Martin Luther King, Jr., National Day of Service is a defining moment each year when Americans across the country step up to make communities more equitable and take action to create the Beloved Community of Dr. King’s dream. While Dr. King believed the Beloved Community was possible, he acknowledged and fought for systemic change. His example is our call to action.” - AmeriCorps
