How We Teamed Up with DoorDash to Fight Food Insecurity
In September 2021, food-delivery service Doordash gave an amazing gift to Latin American Youth Center: a donation of food vouchers to distribute to our youth and families. This gesture alone is worth celebrating, and the ongoing partnership since that first act has made DoorDash one of LAYC’s strongest allies in fighting food insecurity in the regions we serve.

While LAYC combats food insecurity through our expanding food pantry and partnership with Feed the Fridge at the Rita Bright Youth and Family Center and at our Riverdale site in Prince George’s County, DoorDash has bolstered our efforts through their Community Credits program. Launched in early 2021, the Community Credits program was DoorDash’s response to evolving food insecurity issues caused by the pandemic. Specifically, the credits system works as in-kind donations of food vouchers to community organizations with shared goals and values. The hope is that the program generates “access to meals, essentials, and other items can make a difference for these groups as they work to create greater access and equity for their communities.”
After their initial donation in 2021 to commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month, LAYC was able to distribute vouchers as holiday gifts for young people, as stipends for youth who have volunteered in events, and as a “thank you” to individuals who have bravely shared their stories with our audience. The first batch of community credits was a resounding success, allowing dozens of youth to access meals delivered to their door when retrieving them outside wasn’t as safe.
The donation’s impact indicated a strong alignment between DoorDash and LAYC’s goals in combating food insecurity and led to further support this year. DoorDash again provided Community Credits to LAYC to be given to our youth and even donated directly to the 2023 LAYC Gala!
