Murals

Park View Mural Restoration

Summer 2019 @ Teen Center

The mural is located in the Park View neighborhood in DC and depicts that diverse community. The mural was originally designed and painted in 2010 under the direction of teaching artist Helina Metaferia, working with a team of LAYC youth artists. In summer 2019 a new team restored the mural, which had weathered over time. The restoration was led by Luis Peralta del Valle, assisted by artist Sarah Craft and a team of apprentices – Chidubem, Kandice, Imani, and Arjernae.

La Paloma at the Wall

Spring 2019 @ Teen Center

Youth worked in collaboration with Insight Theatre to create a set design for their original production of La Paloma on the Wall. The wall replicates the border between Mexico and the United States where the play is set. Students were able to meet the playwright and discuss ideas. The youth artists created a paneled mural used on the set of the production performed at GALA Hispanic Theatre, in Washington, D.C.

Unidos Mural

Teen Center

Youth in the Graffiti class collaborated on a mural design portraying the history of community organizing and activism in the United States, connecting the work of Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta, and Martin Luther King Jr., who continue to provide hope and inspiration.
