Homelessness has been an issue that has plagued the Washington, D.C. area for many years. Due to immigration laws, gangs, early teen pregnancy, alcohol, and substance abuse, many Latino youth end up on the streets without a helping hand. Without a stable place to live, these youth cannot gain the skills and experience they need to become successful and independent adults. The Latin American Youth Center (LAYC) created the Street Outreach Program (SOP) to identify homeless youth on the streets and connect them to the services they need to begin to build a path to self-sufficiency. The SOP staff works together with the youth to find alternatives for long-term housing or family reunification.
