Upward Bound is one of eight federally funded TRIO programs in the nation. Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their pursuit of higher education. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.
The Upward Bound Program maintains an innovative and non-traditional partnership by collaborating with The Latin American Youth Center (a well known community organization, where the program is housed); The National Council of La Raza (a major national civil rights organization), and The George Washington University Graduate School of Education and Human Development (a well-respected research-based university). This consortium was designed to assist groups typically underserved by federal programming: the Latino, language-minority community.
About Our Students
Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families and/or from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. Of the four Upward Bound programs in the District, the NCLR Upward Bound program at the Latin American Youth Center is the only one that specifically serves the Latino community. The program has also come to include a substantial number of African-American students due to the diversity of the Columbia Heights neighborhood. This unique collaboration and program model has facilitated success to the NCLR Upward Bound Program, for each partner brings their own expertise and resources to the program.Summer College Program at the George Washington University.
